The Department of Wind Energy has a vacancy for a PhD position in the Loads and Control Section (LAC) at DTU Risø Campus. DTU Wind Energy is a mission driven university department with a vision to be the preferred university partner for the global wind energy sector. The department creates value for society through integration of research with education, innovation and research-based consultancy within key fields central to the development and use of wind energy.


DTU Wind Energy develops state-of-the-art design methods to ensure the best performance, lowest cost and overall structural integrity of wind turbines as well as advance the design, operation and control of entire wind power plants for the future needs of the evolving energy system. This is a highly multi-disciplinary issue involving modelling of the non-stationary inflow field, aerodynamics, structural dynamics, structural stability and control. LAC focuses on modelling and analysis of loads and dynamics, aeroelastic stability, and control of wind turbines, and implements its research in software tools and in courses to the benefit of the wind energy community in general.


Research and innovation in wind power plant controls that seek to balance system level objectives around maximizing energy / revenue production, mitigating loads across the turbine fleet / improving reliability, and serving additional needs such as electric grid ancillary services, noise mitigation and more are critical to realizing the full potential of wind energy. The present PhD project addresses key research areas in the field of wind power plant controls including development of computationally efficient but still accurate models of fatigue loading of wind turbines within a power plant over their lifetime and exploration of both open- and closed-loop control strategies that balance loading / reliability against plant energy production. A key sub-theme of this PhD is investigation of novel sensing technologies that may enhance the potential of different wind power plant control strategy solutions.


Responsibilities and tasks

You will be responsible for

  • Development of multi-objective wind farm control set-point optimisation
  • Development of surrogate modelling of wind farms for quasi-steady and dynamic predictions of power output and fatigue loads
  • Coupling of multi-body aeroelastic wind farm simulations with medium to high fidelity wind fields models
  • Development of dynamic wind farm observer design using radar measurements
  • Validation of the wind farm framework with wind farm measurement data

In addition, you are expected to contribute to the following tasks:

  • Assist in teaching the wind energy courses and develop course materials if required.
  • Assist in the supervision of our wind energy master students relating to PhD subject matter expertise and assist in defining the potential projects for the master students.
  • Contribute to relevant research projects.

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in wind energy, aerospace engineering or closely related field.


The successful candidate is required to have:

  • An MSc degree in wind energy or aerospace engineering
  • Documented knowledge and experience in wind plant controls and wind plant turbine load simulation
  • Experience with programming physics-based and data-driven models using preferably Python, Fortran, and Matlab
  • Proficiency with wind turbine dynamic simulation tools such as HAWC2
  • Experience in supervision of student theses at a MS or more junior level
  • Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals

Fluency in communicating and reporting in English

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
