DTU improves measurements of the wind in complex terrain

DTU Wind Energy is not working on their own on the project in Alaiz. Two Spanish partners are participating, too: The Renewable Energy Center (CENER) and University of Balleares (UIB). CENER is responsible for the local support at the site while UIB is making other experimental measurements.
Building wind farms In hilly landscape can be challenging because of the lack of knowledge of the behavior of the wind. Researchers from DTU Wind Energy want to change this.

In Alaiz in Spain hills and mountains characterise the landscape. Because of the terrain it is hard to predict the wind. Consequently – and traditionally – the production of energy has been predicted with large uncertainty for wind turbines situated in this area and similar hilly landscapes. However, the world needs new areas for wind farms. Thus the research project NEWA is now doing research into mapping the wind in such hilly areas.

At the measurements in Alaiz the researchers are using wind scanners which are instruments measuring the wind and mapping even the most detailed movements. Along with six meteorology masts they depict the behavior of the wind in the hilly terrain. PhD student at DTU Wind Energy Pedro Santos explains:
“The purpose of the measurements is combining the experimental data and computer models in order to improve the output parameters of the European Wind Atlas in complex terrain.”

With the new measurements the researchers are one step closer to placing wind turbines and wind farms in hilly terrain.
