The Fluid Mechanics Section at DTU Wind Energy offers a postdoc position within hydrodynamic loads and dynamics of offshore wind turbine substructures. The position is part of the DeRisk research project on extreme wave loads on bottom fixed offshore wind turbines. An important role of the postdoc will be to bridge between fundamental research on hydrodynamic load processes and the subsequent application in aero-elastic modelling and to enhance the collaboration with other groups in the department and industrial partners.

Responsibilities and tasks
The position is for 2.5 years and starts 1 September 2017. The candidate will conduct research into loads on offshore wind turbine substructures with a special focus on loads from nonlinear waves, the associated structural response and the interaction with the full wind turbine under simultaneous wind-wave forcing. During DeRisk a large data set for breaking wave loads have been acquired, and analysis of this data set will be a central part of the work along with modelling in a GPU based fully nonlinear wave model. The emphasis of the research is on transfer of physical knowledge to engineering models for breaking wave loads. Here also statistical and reliability-based methods can be applied.

The research will be conducted in the hydrodynamics group at DTU Wind Energy in collaboration with other postdocs and PhD students. DeRisk further involves a strong network and collaboration with national and international partners.

The candidate is expected to publish in leading international journals and at leading conferences. The position further involves supervision of MSc/PhD students and assistance with the coordination of DTUs activities in DeRisk.

Qualifications:
The candidate must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), preferably in the field of mechanical or civil engineering. The candidate must demonstrate profound knowledge in the fields of hydrodynamics and offshore wind energy. The candidate is further expected to have documented research experience within most of the following fields:

  • nonlinear wave hydrodynamics and wave loads
  • physical insight in analysis of measured data
  • aero-elastic modelling of offshore wind turbine structures and structural response
  • statistical and reliability-based methods
  • mathematical modelling, numerical techniques and programming
  • the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to
  • some teaching experience
  • scientific production and research potential at an international level
  • the ability to promote and utilize research results
  • an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience
  • the ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
