Measuring the wind is an important discipline in wind energy, both in order to know how much wind energy is available and how turbulent the wind is at any location. For research, detailed 3D wind measurements around wind turbines and terrain features are often necessary.

DTU Wind Energy has focussed on the use of lidar technology for measuring wind speed remotely. In many situations, commercially available lidars provide accurate measurements. However, for sophisticated 3D measurements, synchronised systems of multiple-lidars, referred to as WindScanner systems, are required.

DTU Wind Energy is world-leading in WindScanner hardware and software design (see www.windscanner.dk and www.windscanner.eu). We currently have the opportunity for a new Development Engineer to come and contribute to this exciting work.

Responsibilities and tasks
The Development Engineer will join a cross-disciplinary, international team working on the development and application of WindScanner systems. The particular areas of responsibilities will include:

  • Programming of motion control, data acquisition and data analysis software for WindScanners
  • Contributions to all aspects of hardware development - mechanical, electronic and opto-electronic
  • Participation in WindScanner field campaigns, in planning, execution and post-analysis phases

WindScanners are often used as specialist measurement devices in Danish and international projects where the WindScanner team cooperate with experts in many other disciplines. Good communication skills, patience and a positive attitude to travelling are essential requirements for the successful applicant. The daily working language is English.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a Bachelor or Master degree in an engineering discipline where  mechatronics or opto-electronics has been a major component.

Further qualifications

  • High competency in Labview essential and knowledge of  C++,C#, F# desirable
  • Ability to learn new tasks and new systems quickly
  • Good communication skills in spoken and written English
  • Field measurement experience an advantage
  • Ability to work independently and improvise when necessary

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

Workplace and period of employment:

  • The post of development engineer is a permanent position
  • The daily workplace is DTU Risø Campus, Roskilde, Denmark
  • Some travelling must be expected, sometimes for extended periods The successful applicant should start as soon as possible
