Mechanical Testing

We have an accredited test laboratory for mechanical characterization of materials, in particularly composite materials, interfaces and joints. We measure stress-strain laws, cohesive laws, fatigue lifetime and damage tolerance.

The laboratory is equipped with more than 10 mechanical test machines and test specimens from single fibres (approximately 10 microns in diameter), testing in SEM, coupon testing up to small sub-structures (approximate 2 m in size). Non-destructive evaluation techniques such as ultrasound scanning, X-ray imaging, acoustic emission, thermal imaging and digital image correlations are used for the detection of defects and damages.

The research covers both the mechanical characterization of composite materials, development of new materials laws and the development of new improved testing methods and test specimen geometries.
